Marek's Disease Kidney Cell Line (MDCC-UA22)

MDCC (Marek's disease cell culture) UA22 cells were established from a kidney-localized lymphoma using RB-1B-pp38smGFP, a recombinant Marek's disease virus (MDV), strain RB-1B, in which the soluble modified derivative of the green fluorescent protein (smGFP) was inserted downstream of, but not directly fused to, the pp38 protein of MDV.

Highlights:

  • Expression of GFP is tightly controlled in these cells, with >1 % spontaneously expressing GFP
  • Expression is induced during reactivation of the MDV from latency, therefore cells are ideal for studying the early events of reactivation

Marek's disease is a highly contagious viral neoplastic disease in chickens. Marek's disease is caused by an alphaherpesvirus known as 'Marek's disease virus' (MDV) or Gallid herpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2). The disease is characterized by the presence of T cell lymphoma as well as infiltration of nerves and organs by lymphocytes.
