The Wise lab has been interested in variation, function and architecture of membrane surface proteins; and the genomic and post-genomic analysis of mycoplasmas. Mycoplasmas are small eubacteria that cause chronic, degenerative diseases in animals and humans. Their group has employed various experimental approaches to study aspects of prokaryotic gene organization and expression, population dynamics, membrane protein structure and its ramifications in the host, and in silico assessments of genome function and plasticity. The program also examines whole genome sequences of mycoplasmas to reveal patterns of evolutionary reduction and to define functionally important determinants of host range and disease. Earlier studies also included examination of autoantibody specificity in autoimmune MRL mouse models.
