3-Dehydroshikimic Acid (DHS)

3-Dehydroshikimic acid (DHS) is a metabolite of the shikimate pathway with a chromophore suitable for continuous spectrophotometric assay.

DHS was prepared from glucose using an engineered microbe. Purification from fermentation broth afforded highly pure DHS. DHS is a metabolite of the shikimate pathway, which is necessary for synthesis of aromatic amino acids in plants and microorganisms. It is the substrate of shikimate dehydrogenase.
