Jervine is an alkaloid isolated from the corn lily and is an antagonist of the Sonic Hedgehog gene pathway with potential anticancer properties.
Jervine is a potent teratogen that is implicated in birth defects in vertebrates. Its biological activity is mediated by its interaction with the protein Smoothened, which is an integral part of the hedgehog signaling pathway. It inhibits Smoothened and prevents the activation of GLI1 transcription, which in turn inhibits the transcription of hedgehog target genes.
