U-251 MG Glioblastoma Cell Line

Permanent cell line U-251MG derived from a human malignant glioblastoma multiforme.

Highlights:

  • Continue to express glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), over many cell passages
  • Expresses epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) receptors, for inhibition studies
  • Isolated from 75 year old male with astrocytoma, grade III-IV malignant tumor by explant technique

Astrocytomas are a type of cancer in the brain that originate in a particular kind of glial cells, called astrocytes. High-grade astrocytomas, also called glioblastoma multiforme are the most malignant of all brain tumors.
