Protein Cysteine Oxidation

We offer novel in vitro and in vivo probes for cysteine sulfenic acid formation in proteins resulting from the oxidative modification of susceptible cysteine residues by mild oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide, alkyl hydroperoxides, and peroxynitrite. These modifications are of considerable biological interest as important players in redox catalysis and redox regulation, yet they have been notoriously difficult to identify due to their high reactivity, particularly outside their native protein environments.
