Adipose tissue is composed of different cell types (collectively called stromal vascular fraction, SVF) in addition to mature adipocytes, including precursor stem cells, preadipocytes, and fibroblasts. Although some cell lines like 3T3-L1, 3T3-F442A and HIB1 have been widely used for adipocyte biology study, these cells appear to lack of “browning” molecular signature. Conversely, SVF isolated from WAT can develop both white and brown-like adipocyte (brite or beige cell) phenotypes upon cold or adrenergic stimulation, and a bidirectional interconversion exists. Isolation and create an immortalized SVF from adipose tissues is of critical importance to better understand adipocyte biology.
